Poetry Sensation Comes to Macclesfield College

On Tuesday 27 September Macclesfield College welcomed poet, rap battler and internet sensation Mark Grist, who got students linguistic juices flowing with a range of workshops.

Mark, who rose to prominence when his Don't Flop rap battle against Mancunian MC Blizzard became an internet hit, coaxed the inner poet, rapper and performer out of the students whilst telling the wonderful story of his success and hard work.

Mark comments; ‘It’s a really exciting time for poetry at the moment, and it’s really important for people to learn how to express themselves. By listening to other poets allows people to increase their vocabulary, which in effect allows them to express themselves even better’.

After the workshops Mark treated the rest of the College to a performance of some of his best known works.

On visiting Macclesfield College, Mark comments; ‘The College has been incredible. It’s cool to be somewhere with such high standards, where students feel so supported, and challenged all at the same time.’

Head of Programme for English Delia Holroyd-Smith commented; ‘We are ecstatic Mark was able to come into the College and show our students poetry is just as relevant today as ever. The fact he has been commissioned by some of the best known companies in the UK, such as BBC Radio 1, Radio 1 Xtra, Channel 4, Film 4, and Red Bull, demonstrates to our students that English in all its forms can provide pathways to some really exciting careers, plus we got to see Mark perform my favourite poem A Girl Who Reads.’
