Pottery students’ work goes on display at prestigious V&A exhibition

Two pottery students at Macclesfield College have been selected for the ‘Inspired by…’ competition and exhibition run in association with one of the world's leading museums of art and design, the Victoria and Albert (V&A) in London.

The two selected students, Deirdre Montgomery and Jane Beaumont, submitted work that they created whilst on a part-time course for adults in pottery at the College. Three other students from the course also submitted pieces to form a large group entry by the College's pottery students.

Deirdre’s work was inspired by V&A exhibits depicting the story of Apollo and Daphne from ancient Greek mythology, while Jane took inspiration from the work of acclaimed Chilean sculptor Fernando Casasempere.

Inspired by… is an art competition for people in adult education, showcasing new works inspired by exhibits in the V&A’s collections. Organised and hosted by Morley Gallery in collaboration with V&A Museums, participants in the competition are invited to create a work of art or craft inspired by the collections of either the V&A South Kensington or the V&A Museum of Childhood.

Entries are judged by curators from the V&A and selected works exhibited at the Morley Gallery in London. Prizes are to be awarded to winners in various categories and both Deirdre and Jane have been invited to a private view and prize-giving ceremony at the Morley Gallery on the 16th May.

Their lecturer at the College, Heidi Gibbs, commented, “I’m really proud of all the students who entered the competition as their standard of work was exceptionally high. I encourage anyone who is visiting London to call into the Morley Gallery to enjoy the exhibition and I wish Deirdre and Jane good luck at the prize-giving ceremony.”

The students’ work with be on display at the Morley Gallery on Westminster Bridge Road, London from 17 May-17 June 2016.
