Students at Macclesfield College of Further & Higher Education recently participated in a special week of industry-focused activity to help prepare them with future career skills. Across the campus students took part in work-based activities, demonstrations, fieldtrips and talks from industry speakers to boost their knowledge of working in the real world.
Students from a wide range of vocational courses spent the week honing their skills – such as the Construction students who showcased their brickwork skills by building a temporary wall at the front of the campus building which spelt out the college name. Local employers from the Construction industry were invited in to view their handiwork and discuss apprenticeship opportunities. The students also designed, planned and cleared an area on the campus ready for construction of an outdoor activity area, whilst Carpentry students were busy with production of their designs from pallets to park benches.
In the College’s Silk Room Restaurant, Catering students trained in the kitchen under the instruction of alumni students who are now top chefs in their own right at local establishments. They also prepared canapes for a special employers’ buffet. Over in the onsite Pure Hair and Beauty Salon students held perming workshops and prepared for a work placement on a local production of Starlight Express.
Art and Design students gained industry experience by organising an exhibition of their work at the Sound (Track) Art Exhibition at Charles Roe House, whilst in the College’s Fashion studios students worked on a special print design brief for the company Think Positive Prints.
Students on Engineering courses took on the role of contractors and carried out service tests on the workshop’s equipment, and in the College’s Automotive training facility at Fence Avenue students undertook vehicle inspection tests, practiced valeting techniques and were given a demonstration of the BOSCH diagnostic equipment.
Students from Foundation Learning courses were excellent ambassadors for the College during a trip to Skills North West, at Event City in Manchester. They explored various educational and vocational paths and experience fun activities such as having prosthetic make-up applied and reading the ITV news in a studio mock-up. The students also participated in Barclays Life Skills Survival workshops.
The College would like to thank the many industry partners who generously offered their time and services to provide students with a fantastic opportunity to develop their employability skills.
