Giving you a bright future

HE students graduating

A Higher National qualification or Foundation Degree will enhance your performance in the workplace and give you excellent employment prospects. It will act as a stepping stone to further study, allowing you to 'top up' to a full Honours Degree of a relevant degree programme at a university if you wish. Research shows that on average, those with degree-level qualifications earn substantially more than people with a Level 3 qualification.

High quality teaching

In a recent review by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Macclesfield College received a full set of ‘Confidence’ judgements, the highest accolades possible, demonstrating the soundness of the current and likely future ‘Academic Standards’ and ‘Quality of Learning Opportunities’.

Students benefit from small study groups, separate quiet study area and lecturers with extensive industry experience and close employer links.

Flexible, manageable study

Our HE Study Area

Higher Nationals and Foundation Degrees are studied 'full-time' for 2 years, involving 1-2 days a week at college, or part-time over 3-4 years, which means you can continue to work and earn whilst studying. Hours you are required to attend classes can vary depending on the qualification. Some involve work placement projects and require you to be employed in a relevant occupation; others may require a suitable voluntary placement. If you are studying on fewer hours you will need to be able to commit to considerable study time outside your classes. Some involve examinations, but many focus on continuous assessment and coursework, which can include essays, presentations, case studies, portfolios, practicals, reports and research projects.

Higher Education qualifications to suit you

Higher Nationals and Foundation Degrees are suitable for anyone aged 18 and over, whether you’re straight from College or Sixth Form or are a mature student. In general you need GCSE grade C or equivalent in English and Maths and a suitable Level 3 qualification such as:

  • AS/A2 Level
  • BTEC Extended Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • NVQ/Diploma Level 3 or equivalent
  • Access to HE Diploma

However, you will be considered if you have the appropriate work experience or a strong desire to succeed.
