Course Information

Overview
This qualification is designed for learners who wish to develop an understanding of autism and how to support individuals with autism.

This qualification aims to Develop learners’ understanding of autism and the principles of supporting individuals with autism - covering the person-centred approach and influence of positive communication methods, how to support positive behaviour and how individuals with autism can be supported to live healthy and fulfilled lives.

Who is it for?
It is recommended that learners are working, volunteering or on practical placement to be able to show competence in both knowledge and skills.
This Award may be suitable for those whose job role is not exclusively focused around supporting individuals with learning disabilities, but who come into contact with people as part of their job, for example:
- health
- care
- education
- housing
- leisure
- employment
- libraries
- people working in probation

Other people for whom this course would benefit includes:
* Employment support workers, dementia care advisors and palliative care professionals could complete the award to enable them to better tailor their service to people’s needs. Used in this context these qualifications would support the implementation of the current autism, dementia and end of life strategies for people with learning disabilities
*Workers who are new to learning disability services but already know about social care
*Workers in learning disability services wishing to undertake a shorter CPD qualification
*People in community and volunteering roles who work alongside or support people with a learning disability who want more information so that they can work towards providing high quality care for individuals with learning disabilities.

Outcome
On successful completion of this course you will gain an NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism

Entry Requirements
There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 1 qualification.

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 and above.

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

It is recommended that learners are working, volunteering or on practical placement to be able to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

Content
During this course potential units you may cover include:
- Introduction to autism
- Using a person-centred approach to support individuals with autism
- Communication and social interaction in individuals with autism
- Sensory processing, perception and cognition in individuals with autism
- Supporting positive behaviour in individuals with autism
- Supporting individuals with autism to live healthy and fulfilled lives

Assessment
This is a knowledge-only qualification; therefore, no real work environment placement is required.
