Course Information

Overview
This qualification is concerned with the training of counsellors to a professional level of competency.

As a pre-requisite for admission to the Diploma course learners must possess a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills or the equivalent obtained elsewhere, as you will further develop the knowledge, skills and self-development from their Level 3 experience.

It is anticipated that learners will be involved in placement with rigorous and qualified casework supervision and this should enable an interchange of experiences between the placements and the classroom work on a constant basis.

Who is it for?
This qualification is designed for those learners who are seeking to be professionally qualified counsellors.

Learners must be 19 years or over.

Entry Requirements
Level 3 counselling skills qualification or equivalent.

All students need to undergo an interview process to satisfy the tutors of their commitment to and suitability to the course.

Content
The course focuses on 7 areas:
* Professional and organisational issues in counselling
* Counselling in a Diverse Society
* Counselling Theory
* Advanced Counselling Skills
* Self Awareness for Counsellors
* Research methodologies in counselling
* Counselling Placement

*Aims*
This qualification combines the professional aspects, e.g. theoretical knowledge, counselling skills development, self-appraisal and commitment to provision of an ethical quality service and professional development element, which is necessary to ensure that the counsellor is fit to practice by
* Meeting the training contact hours requirement for basic training at a professional level for recognition as a qualified counsellor
* Providing opportunity to further developed skills, including a 100-hour practice component under supervision
* Creating a reflective practitioner
* Developing a deep understanding of one therapeutic model with knowledge of two others

It is recommended that students undergo their own personal therapy during the course and become members of BACP.

Assessment
The units are assessed through a variety of methods which will include written assignments and portfolio work. All work is internally verified and moderated externally.

Minimum 80% attendance is required for the course duration

Placement requirements- 100 hour practice component under supervision.
Students will need to make their own placement arrangements, with support from the college, and are also responsible for providing the appropriate amount of supervision as set out in the ABC guidelines.

Learners who complete this qualification may progress to Postgraduate and Post Qualifying courses in counselling studies.
Many learners progress towards national accreditation status with professional lead bodies.
